Binaural Technology

"Bi" means "two" and "aural" means "of or concerning the ear or hearing".
Binaural technique rests on the fact that human hearing - including perception of direction and distance - is based on the sound that reaches our two ears. It is from these inputs that we generate the experience of a room's acoustics or the noise of a car driving towards us from the rear.

By producing an accurate sound pressure on our eardrums, via headphones or loudspeakers, the full listening impression of a given situation can be created. Hence, it is not necessary to recreate the entire acoustic environment in order to provide a faithful rendering. Only the accuracy of the sounds close to our ears is essential.

The initial attempts at developing binaural technique were based on the idea of recording sound through microphones placed in the ears of an acoustic mannequin - the dummy head - and subsequently render sound recording presented over headphones.
