Virtual Meeting Environment (VME)In the near future 3D Audio is going to revolutionize the
meeting culture of our society.
The chancing factor is conference systems using 3D Audio. Until now meetings undertaken by telecom communication has had a limited success due to the fact that voices become unclear and grumble together annoyed by back ground noise. With 3D Audio it is possible to position the voices of a number of persons in a virtual audio space so they distinguishable the listeners throughout the conversation. This makes it possible to imitate a real meeting environment - to imitate the so-called cocktail effect, which means that if a conversation among several persons are taking place, you can distingish between the voices, and focus on the person you want to listen to, and just on divided attention hear the other voices - real life listening so to speak. Another advantage comes through the speech intelligibility. By using 3D Audio it is possibly to achieve an improvement in speech intelligibility on average 5 to 6 dB. The intelligibility of the speech is dependent on the level of 'noise' from an interfering signal, the distance and direction towards it. If there is 90 degrees between the noise and speech signal on the horizontal level you, can have an improvement up to 10 dB. This knowledge can be used when you position speech signals in a
virtual audio environment like a conference system
Three persons can meet and let a fourth member participate
through a 3D Audio conference system, e.g. supported by a screen
We are quite certain that companies in the field of developing solutions for telecom would benefit from working with the new 3D audio technology - and we look forward to launch co-operation with companies wishing to be ahead in a changing telecom world. AM:3D has paved the way for the innovation of the first generation of 3D based telecom systems. The tool: AM's 3D Audio engine, probably the worlds best, is based on an advanced HRTF-database using non-individual HRTF's, this in co-operation with the Acoustics Laboratory at Aalborg University, Denmark. Telecom service in the field - hand free wireless communication with 3D Audio. Today it`s common that people, working outdoors in teams under difficult conditions for communication, wear tiny ear microphones. To be mentioned: Firemen, security, military and anti-terror, off shore, marine and people in extreme sports. This equipment can be utterly improved by integrating 3D Audio technique. When a police officer and his team move around in a crowded street communicating with ear microphones, they will not only listen to the colleagues, but also immediately have a clear sense of their positions in the environment. If they move on your left or right side, in front of, or behind you, above or under you. The speech signals are located 360º around the actor horizontally as well as vertically. Several messages, received simultaneously, are not a problem, due to the separation of sound signals and a lower background noise, which all together create excellent speech intelligibility. For a moving team in the field the result is in the end a better orientation and enhanced awareness. With the rapid development of wireless communication, e.g. supported by Bluetooth technology, the digital technique will take over electronic communication and 3D Audio will play an important role in this development.
